Alcoholism is a struggle that a large number of individuals deal with on a daily basis. More than 15 million people struggle with alcoholism and it only continues to grow over time. High functioning alcoholics are estimated only 20% of that 15 million, and they can be a challenge to identify without knowing the right symptoms. 

The impact of the ongoing pandemic of Covid 19 is felt across the nation. This is especially true for those who are undergoing drug and alcohol misuse concerns. Nearly 3.3 million individuals die to substance use each year and that number will grow even larger by the end of this year due to Covid's impact. Covid 19’s presence has given us an insight on the severity of the problem of the use of illicit substances during a pandemic. 

Drug addiction is a major problem in many places across the globe. With more than one third of the adult population battling drug addiction on a daily basis, research has been done to identify a person’s predisposition for drug addiction. One of the findings is that genetics may play a role in a person’s predisposition to drug misuse.

Drug abuse is a common problem in many households. Over 19 million individuals aged 12 and above experience its effects. These individual’s personality and behavior are severely hampered by their use of illicit substances. However personality and behavioral disorders aren’t the only risks. They are also at higher risk for long term illnesses and diseases that otherwise healthy individuals would not have.

Over 16 million people in the United States have a form of alcohol intake disorder and over 10 million have a substance use disorder according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health’s 2018 survey. Nearly 10% of all households have an alcoholic or an individual misusing drugs. This can have a major impact on family dynamics and the overall happiness of the individuals within the household.

The common assumption when it comes to alcoholism is that a person who is drinking is struggling with life, and can sometimes even fail to make ends meet.  However, there is a small portion of alcoholics who are succeeding in life. They are called high functioning alcoholics, and nearly 20% of alcoholics are high functioning alcoholics. Despite their success, they still require assistance to overcome alcohol addiction.

Substance misuse has always had dangers associated with it. It is responsible for damaging the internal organs of a large number of individuals. Alcohol is only second to Hepatitis C when it comes to causing liver cirrhosis. However, another pressing matter in regards to substance misuse is how it can affect the mental health of an individual as it takes over every facet of their life.

Stress is a concern that many share during the coronavirus pandemic. A survey by the National Endowment for Financial Education has shown that 9 out of 10 Americans, or 88%, are experiencing financial stress due to the pandemic.  

Americans across the nation are experiencing varying degrees of social isolation, and it is a pressing matter for the general health of the populace. This is due to the fact that humans require social interaction in order to remain healthy. With a pandemic forcing people to distance themselves from each other in order to slow down the spread of the virus, social isolation is an inevitable occurrence. But what exactly are the risks of social isolation on people during a pandemic, and what options are available to mitigate its effect?

Despite his success, he struggled with problems that caused him to lose popularity, and put his future in jeopardy.
