How Horses Support the Journey from PTSD to Post-Traumatic Growth

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can feel like a dark cloud that lingers long after a traumatic experience, affecting one’s ability to function or find joy in life. Yet, there is a powerful and lesser-known possibility beyond PTSD: Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG). PTG is the positive psychological change that occurs as a result of struggling with traumatic experiences. It’s the ability to find new strength, purpose, and appreciation for life. One transformative tool for guiding people on this journey is equine-assisted coaching, where horses play an extraordinary role in the healing process. Soberman's Estate has horses on site and the clients participate in three Equine Therapy sessions per week.(672 x 480 px) (4)

The Connection Between PTSD and PTG

While PTSD focuses on the challenges that arise from trauma—such as anxiety, depression, and hypervigilance—PTG emphasizes the potential for growth that follows trauma. It's the idea that individuals can emerge stronger, with greater resilience, deeper relationships, and a more meaningful perspective on life. Equine-assisted coaching taps into this potential for growth, and the unique relationship between humans and horses becomes the bridge from pain to progress.

Why Horses?

Horses have an innate sensitivity to human emotions, which allows them to serve as mirrors of a person’s internal state. Their ability to sense subtle changes in body language, energy, and emotion makes them ideal partners in the healing journey. Here’s how horses facilitate the shift from PTSD to PTG:

  1. Grounding Through Presence
Horses live in the present moment, and they encourage clients to do the same. People with PTSD often feel trapped in memories of the past or anxious about the future. During an equine-assisted session, the horse helps bring the individual back to the here and now, encouraging a sense of grounding and safety. Being present allows clients to release the grip of traumatic memories and opens the door for new experiences and insights.
  2. Developing Emotional Awareness
Horses respond to what is happening inside of us, whether we realize it or not. If a person is anxious, tense, or angry, the horse will react accordingly. This non-judgmental feedback from the horse helps clients become more aware of their emotions. By understanding how their internal state affects their surroundings, clients begin to develop emotional awareness, which is a key step toward healing and growth.
  3. Building Trust and Relationship
Trauma often erodes trust in oneself and others. Working with a horse encourages the client to rebuild that trust. Horses require a delicate balance of confidence and calmness in order to establish a connection. Learning to communicate with a horse fosters a new sense of self-confidence and reinforces the possibility of healthy, trusting relationships with others.
  4. Non-Verbal Healing
Trauma can be difficult to express in words. Equine-assisted coaching offers an alternative way to process emotions. The interactions with horses are often non-verbal but deeply profound. Through the process of grooming, walking, or simply being near the horse, clients experience healing on a subconscious level. These non-verbal exchanges help release emotions that might otherwise remain suppressed.
  5. Learning Self-Regulation and Co-Regulation
Horses are experts at regulating their own nervous systems, and they help humans do the same. A person dealing with PTSD might experience extreme emotional highs and lows, but in the presence of a calm, grounded horse, they can learn how to regulate their own emotional state. Through observing the horse’s behavior, clients discover the importance of co-regulation—learning to calm oneself by connecting with another being. This skill is crucial for managing PTSD symptoms and moving toward PTG.
  6. Fostering Resilience and Growth
Overcoming challenges with a horse, whether it’s earning their trust or working through a difficult moment, gives clients tangible evidence of their ability to grow through adversity. These small wins in the arena translate to larger victories in life. The resilience developed with horses builds confidence, empowering individuals to tackle their PTSD and move toward PTG.

From Survival to Thriving

The journey from PTSD to PTG isn’t easy, but horses offer a powerful source of support and reflection. They help individuals reclaim their sense of self, learn how to trust again, and discover that growth is possible even after trauma. In the safe, non-judgmental space of equine-assisted coaching, clients not only find relief from the weight of PTSD but also unlock their potential to thrive.

If you or someone you know is struggling with the aftermath of trauma, equine-assisted coaching may offer a path toward healing, growth, and transformation. Embrace the wisdom of horses, and take the first step from surviving to thriving.
